Spotlight on Education: Cobalt Studios

Blog 0 Comment

In honor of that wonderful time of year when many of you will be looking for schools or training programs to take your skills to the next level, we are introducing a new series; Spotlight on Education. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking looks at different training opportunities in the United States. Ranging from short apprenticeships to graduate programs, these are all well-known and respected institutions taught by highly respected professionals in our field.

To begin our series, we’ll be looking at  Cobalt Studios. Located in White Lake, New York two hours northwest of NYC, Cobalt Studios is situated on 28 acres of fields and woods.  Having opened their doors more than 25 years ago, Cobalt Studios was founded by Rachel Keebler and Howard Jones, with the intent of training future scenics in the mold of the guilds from the Renaissance.  For example, their Artist in Resident Program combines classroom projects, lectures and demos with real world job experience as apprentices on professional projects.

While Cobalt is worth mentioning for the caliber of their courses alone, what sets Cobalt apart from other programs is the range of the courses they have available for all levels of painters and educators. Let’s walk through each, starting with their 3-5 day Seminars and ending with their 2-Year Artist Residency.

The goal for Rachel Keebler and her rotating staff of highly trained instructors, found here,  is to develop the eye for judgment, and to impart skills to the hands and arms of the artists.  It is not just about passing along scenic painting techniques, but to create a base from which they are developing a pool of successful painters who have a positive commitment to our craft.
